A spare card unused for a year
An AI key untouched for a year ran up a frightening bill in a single day.
(Illustrative scenario, not a real incident)
Imagine that a year ago you got a spare cardfor a shop that, in the end, never opened. The card was never used once, and you forgot about it long ago.
Then one day, within a single day,it charged a frightening amount. The day before, the bill was almost zero.
This “spare card”was an API key for an AI service. It was made for an app under development back then;the app never launched, the project stopped, and the key just stayed where it was.
It wasn't an alert that told me.I happened to open the billing pageand saw that bar suddenly shooting up.
By the time you see an abnormal bill, the thing is already half done.
In everyday life, we already understand this:when an account untouched for six monthsis suddenly drained of a large sum, anyone would be suspicious. But in the cloud,we often forgetto look at ourselves with the same eyes.
When the baseline is zero, every single dollar is a signal.
It jumped straight up from zero, with no ramp in between. My guess is it was gathered into some “key pool”and passed around for many people to share. That part is inference, not proof.
A key that gets picked up doesn't need to be guessed.
Laozi said: “In pursuit of learning, every day something is gained; in pursuit of the Tao, every day something is dropped.”Learning is adding, day by day;the way of doing things is subtracting, day by day.
Keys you don't use, put away.Services you don't use, turn off.Projects you don't use, bring to an end.
Set budget alerts on every project, and especially on the ones that normally cost zero.
